The useful ones cluster around IN and IM: INANE, INDEX, INFER, IMBUE, IMPEL. Those two prefixes do most of the work, and knowing that turns a 118 word list into two small groups plus a handful of exceptions.

The exceptions are the interesting part. IGLOO, IRATE, ITCHY and ICTUS have nothing in common except their first letter, and they are the ones a solver forgets to consider when the opening letter turns out to be a vowel.
