Word unscrambler
Type the letters you are holding. You get every word they spell, longest first, plus every shorter word hiding inside them. Nothing is stored and there is no limit on how many times you run it.
Is this a word unscrambler or an anagram solver?
Both, and the difference matters. An anagram solver uses every letter you gave it exactly once. An unscrambler also returns the shorter words hiding inside your letters. This does the second, and the longest results at the top of the page are the anagrams.
How the unscrambler works
- It sorts your letters into a canonical order and looks up every combination of them at once, so it checks the whole dictionary rather than sampling it.
- It returns every word your letters can spell, including shorter ones, because a five letter play is often worth more than a seven letter one you cannot fit.
- It never uses a letter more times than you gave it. Two Ss in a word means you handed it two Ss.
About this solver
Does the unscrambler use every letter I type?
It uses each letter at most as many times as you typed it, and it returns words of every length, not only words that use all of them. The longest results sit at the top, so the true anagrams of your full rack are the first thing you see. If you only want those, read the top group and stop.
Where does the word list come from?
The ENABLE word list, a public domain list that most free word game tools are built on. It carries no proper nouns, no acronyms and no abbreviations, which is why a two letter result here is a real two letter word rather than a stock ticker. The same list feeds every page on the site.
Why did it reject a word I know is real?
Because it is not in that list. No two dictionaries agree: word game lists include dialect and inflected forms a desk dictionary omits, and they leave out proper nouns and very recent coinages. If you think something genuinely belongs, the contact page reaches a human who will look at it.
Can I use it during an online game?
That is between you and the people you are playing. It is built for crosswords, puzzles, teaching and the moment you are certain your tiles spell something. Using it against an unwitting opponent in a competitive game is cheating, and no tool on the internet changes that.
Are my letters stored anywhere?
No. The letters go into the URL so you can share or bookmark a result, and the answer is worked out and thrown away. Nothing is written to a database and there is no account, no login and no history to leak.
Can I put this on my own site?
Link to it freely, from anywhere, with no permission needed. What you may not do is copy the pages or republish the lists as your own, which the license page sets out in plain language. If you want an embeddable version, ask and it may get built.
